A REVOLUTIONARY NEW APPROACH IN TEACHING SCIENCE TO CHILDREN
Top Secret Science & Math is a division of the Massachusetts Science Center which was established as Weird Science in 1995 as an educational organization to increase the scientific and technological literacy of K-8 students throughout Massachusetts. Realizing the explosive growth of science and math education and desiring to be a part of this opportunity, Top Secret Science & Math was created as a direct division of the MSC to enter this highly specialized field. Our goal is to create educational centers throughout the United States Some alarming new studies provide the challenge for parents everywhere -- in 2005 the National Science Foundation found that only 28% of elementary school teachers considered themselves qualified to teach science. In another recent study conducted by the Bayer Corporation, 77% of teachers agreed that more hands-on activities should be in the science classroom, yet 50% say they are not effectively trained in using hands-on materials. Other new research shows that by third grade 50% of all students don’t like science, and by 8th grade -- 80% dislike it. What this means to each of us is that because of a lack of science and math education we are losing our competitive edge in both the science and high technology world marketplace. This is a problem for the economic future of America. With a combination of budget cuts and curriculum priorities, most elementary school teachers provide little in hands-on, interactive science. And, added to this fact, most teachers don’t have backgrounds in science which increases their discomfort level with the many science areas to cover. So, instead, they concentrate on more basic topics like earth or environmental science. But kids are thirsting for science knowledge and truly want the opportunity to become a part of the explorations and discoveries of the world around them.
To help solve this problem Top Secret Science & Math has created an exciting and fun international Licensee program designed to help students learn and enjoy science and math at centers all across the world. The programs consist of spectacular yet simple activities and are offered as after-school programs, group special events, school field trips and science birthday parties.
